When you sign for an apartment lease, you are personally guaranteeing that rental payments will be made on time for the duration of the lease and that you will be responsible for any damage to the property. Late or missing payments may appear as negative information on your credit report.

Positive Rental Information in Your Credit Report

Landlords and property management companies can report both positive and negative rent payment history to consumer reporting companies which specialize in collecting rental history, such as RentBureau. Experian owns RentBureau, so the positive history they collect is included in Experian credit reports.

If you rent from an individual landlord or property management company that does not report data, you may sign up with a service working with Experian RentBureau that allows for the electronic payment and collection of your rent. Such services allow you to opt in for credit history reporting. You cannot report your own rental payment history.
