|Intro bonus for new cardholders||$99 annual fee (waived the first 12 months)|
|Earn 2 miles per dollar on gas, restaurant and American Airlines purchases||No travel insurance or protections on purchases|
|Preferred boarding and a free checked bag for you and up to four companions||Other co-branded AAdvantage cards may be more compelling|
The Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ Mastercard® is a mid-range airline rewards credit card. With a relatively standard annual fee ($99) and a variety of helpful perks and discounts, this is a card you may want to consider if you're a frequent traveler.
Here's what you can look forward to, and a few potential drawbacks you should keep in mind before you apply for this card.
Earn Double Miles on Bonus Categories
While many airline credit cards offer bonus miles on airline purchases, the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ Mastercard® does that, and more. You can earn:
- 2 miles per dollar spent on eligible American Airlines purchases
- 2 miles per dollar spent at restaurants
- 2 miles per dollar spent at gas stations
- 1 mile per dollar spent elsewhere
The miles you earn will accrue in your AAdvantage account, meaning you get to keep the miles even if you close the card.
New cardholders who haven't received the intro bonus from this card during the previous 48 months can get an extra 50,000 AAdvantage miles if they spend $2,500 within three months of opening their account. You can then redeem them for free flights on American Airlines or partner airlines. Award flights start at 7,500 miles each way for flights that are under 500 miles and within the contiguous US and Canada.
AAdvantage also offers other redemption options, such as rental cars or hotels. You can even exchange miles for products and services.
Get Perks for Cardholders and Travel Companions
The Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ Mastercard® offers several benefits that could make it a good fit, even if you only occasionally fly on American Airlines.
- A free checked bag for you and up to four companions on the same domestic flight reservation
- Preferred boarding for you and up to four companions on the same domestic flight reservation
- A 25% savings on eligible food and beverage purchases during American Airlines flights
- A $125 American Airlines flight discount if you make at least $20,000 worth of purchases during the first year you have your card and you renew
- No foreign transaction fees
Considering the cost for checking a bag starts at $30 each way on domestic flights, the free checked bag perk would more than cover the card's $99 annual fee after two solo round-trip flights. If you're traveling with your family or friends, you could recoup your cost in just one flight.
Additionally, the card could come in handy if you tend to look for the lowest-cost tickets, such as American Airlines Basic Economy class. Usually when flying Basic Economy, you won't receive a free checked bag and board in group nine. If you're a cardholder, you'll get a free checked bag (except on flights to or from Europe) and board in group five.
Manage Your Account Easily and Safely
As a The Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ Mastercard® cardholder, you'll also get access to Citi's online account platform, mobile app and additional card features and benefits. These can make it easier to manage your account and keep your information safe.
For example, you could get an alert when your bill is due in a few days, if there's a transaction when your card isn't present or if there's a transaction for more than an amount of your choosing. These alerts can help you keep an eye on your account and detect unauthorized card use.
If something does happen, you'll be covered with zero liability protection against unauthorized charges. You also can use the Citi® Quick Lock feature to temporarily stop purchases and cash advances if you lose your card—and then unlock your card when you find it—rather than having to cancel your card and wait for a replacement.
Conveniently, this card allows contactless purchases (meaning you can tap rather than having to swipe or insert your card) and is compatible with digital wallets if you'd prefer to pay with your mobile device.
As a World Elite™ Mastercard® cardholder, you receive benefits from Mastercard, such a free ShopRunner membership and $10 in Lyft credit once per month after paying for five Lyft rides with your card.
But Beware of the Lack of Travel Protections
Citi recently announced changes to the benefits on many of its cards, including the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ Mastercard®. Effective September 22, 2019, the card no longer offers:
- Worldwide car rental insurance
- Trip cancellation and interruption protection
- Worldwide travel accident insurance
- Trip delay protection
- Baggage delay protection
- Lost baggage protection
- Citi® Price Rewind
These insurance products and protections can help cover your expenses in unexpected travel situations. If these types of benefits are important to you, you may want to look for a credit card that offers travel insurance or protections.
What Else to Consider if You're a Frequent American Airlines Traveler
Whether you're an American Airlines loyalist or live near an American Airlines hub and frequently find yourself booking their flights, a co-branded American Airlines card could be one of the best travel card options.
The Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ Mastercard® is a good pick for a mid-range card, but it's not your only option. Citi also offers a co-branded American Airlines card that doesn't have an annual fee (but offers fewer benefits) and a premium card with a $450 annual fee and much more benefits.
Alternatively, Barclays offers co-branded AAdvantage cards as well. The AAdvantage® Aviator® Red World Elite Mastercard®, in particular, could be a good comparison card.
It offers similar checked bag and preferred boarding benefits, fewer bonus categories for earning miles on purchases, but a $25 annual statement credit for Wi-Fi purchases on American Airlines flights. While the $99 annual fee isn't waived the first year, the 60,000-mile intro bonus only requires a single purchase and the card offers many travel insurance and protection benefits similar to those the Citi card recently lost.
|Purchase APR: 17.74% - 25.74%||Grace period: 23 days|
|Transfer APR: 17.74% - 25.74%||Annual fee: $99 (waived the first year)|
|Cash advance APR: 26.99%||Balance transfer fee: Greater of $5 or 3% of the amount transferred|
|Minimum interest charge: $0.50||Cash advance fee: Greater of $10 or 5% of the cash advance amount|
|Foreign transaction fee: $0|
|Late payment fee: Up to $39|
|Returned payment fee: Up to $39|
You can add an authorized user to your Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ Mastercard® account and that person will receive a card as well. While they can use the card to make purchases, the miles earned will get deposited into your AAdvantage account—and you'll be responsible for paying the bill.
Authorized users don't get the checked bag or preferred boarding benefits, even if they purchase tickets with their card. Your authorized users may be able to access your account information.
