Hitwise® methodology

Hitwise is the world’s largest sample of online consumer behavior. By combining a large and diverse sample sourced from both Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and opt-in Internet panel providers, Hitwise meets the challenge of accurately reporting daily search and visit metrics for millions of websites. Our use of blended ISP and Internet panel data sources combined with demographic and lifestyle information give Hitwise scale and breadth that is unique in the marketplace.

Hitwise is aggregated and anonymous behavior data from geographically diverse sources, representing all types of Internet usage, including home, work, educational and public-access. To ensure this data is accurate and representative, it is weighted to universe estimates including the U.S. Census Bureau.

Because of the size of the Hitwise sample, we are able to report on millions of unique Internet users, hundreds of millions of monthly site visits and tens of millions of monthly searches.

The methodology and data quality processes we use to compile the Hitwise sample are audited by PricewaterhouseCoopers annually.
