Virginia HB 1766 & SB 1056 Change Notification

This measure provides that for unemployment compensation claims effective on or after January 1, 2026, an eligible individual’s weekly benefit amount shall be $100 higher than the current weekly benefit amount.

Effective Date

January 1, 2026

Virginia House Bill 1766 & Senate Bill 1056 Implication to Stakeholders

An increase in claimants’ weekly benefit amounts impacts employers’ tax rates. The more benefits paid from the employer’s tax account, the more likely their rate will eventually increase.

Recommended Action

There is nothing further employers can or should do, aside from perhaps writing your legislators and governor as to why you may disagree with their decision to increase the weekly benefit amount.
