With the latest final ruling from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) regarding healthcare security, privacy and data breach notifications, regulations are changing the healthcare industry. The HHS hopes the final rule, which goes into effect March 26, 2013, will strengthen the data and security protection for individuals’ personal health information (PHI). The latest ruling finalizes the HIPAA Breach Notification Rule, which is an interim rule that has been in effect since 2009.
The fifth annual Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Security Survey found that hospitals lead the way and has greatly improved, but the healthcare industry isn’t perfect yet. Hospitals lead the way with more than 90 percent of the respondents in a recent study indicating that they conduct formal risk analyses.
