I have been making monthly payments for a hospital bill. The hospital has stopped all correspondence and continues to cash my checks. They have also reported on my credit report with no reduction in debt updated. The report states collection even though they are accepting payment.
Since you indicated the debt appears on your report as a collection, it is likely that the hospital has stopped correspondence because they have sold the debt to a collection agency. If so, you should be making payments directly to the collection agency, not to the hospital.
Some collection agencies may update the balance due on the account as you make payments. However, they are not required to do so and many do not. The status of the account with the collection agency may continue to show “Collection” and the original balance until the account is paid in full or settled for less than originally owed.
Once the account is paid off, the status will be updated to show that the account is paid/closed and the balance is zero.
Thanks for asking.
