Ex-Spouse’s Address Appears on Credit Report

Dear Experian,

After viewing my credit report, I saw that two addresses are addresses where I have never lived. They are addresses of my ex-husband. How do they get on my report?

Dear TTO,

Your credit report displays a history of all the addresses that are reported to us by your creditors. Your creditors may report any address where you have received mail and any address associated with an account that has your name on it.

If you opened joint accounts with your ex-spouse while you were married and have not contacted the lender to have your name removed, those accounts will still appear on your credit report along with any address currently associated with the account.

The creditor may agree to remove your name from the account if your ex-spouse has assumed responsibility for it. Even if the credit refuses to remove you as a responsible party for the debt, the addresses have no effect on your credit worthiness or credit scores.

Thanks for asking.
