Balance on Collection Account Not Updated

Dear Experian,

I have a “charge off” credit card account on my credit report that I have been repaying for over a year. I am paying the original creditor, as they handled their own collections. Why aren’t these payments showing on my credit report?

Once an account is charged off and/or sent to collections, it is considered a “final” status, and will show the amount that was written off as a loss.

Many companies do not update the balance on an account in collections until it is paid in full. While some creditors may update the remaining balance on the account as you make payments, the status will continue to show “charge off.”

Once the balance is paid off, the creditor will update the status of the account to “Paid charge off.” The account will continue to show that it was a charge off prior to being paid, and may also show the original amount that was written off as a loss as part of the account history.

The charged off account will be deleted seven years from the date of the first missed payment that led to that status.
