As with many loan types, student loans can have a big impact on your credit score. Whether you’re a cosigner or you are making payments yourself, on-time payments are a factor in your good credit score. When handled correctly, student loans can also play a major role in building a student’s credit history, which is often nonexistent when they’re just starting out.

Cosigning on Student Loans

When you cosign a loan, you agree to be equally responsible for the debt. The loan will be included in your credit history and can affect your creditworthiness as well as your ability to qualify for loans in the future, including cosigning for another student loan. Although you are just a cosigner, all missed payments will be included in your credit history and future lenders can consider the debt and monthly payment as part of the total amount you owe.
