When you request your personal credit report directly from Experian you will receive two important things along with it. The first is a “report number.” The second is dispute instructions that include a toll-free telephone number, mailing address and Internet address.
The report number you receive on your personal credit report is different than the number your lender receives. Using your number to identify your report ensures that you are contacting Experian about an Experian report, because Experian can’t discuss other credit reports with you. It also ensures the report you have is current and includes recent updates to your history. Having a current report enables Experian’s representatives to answer your questions or process your disputes most effectively.
You can request a free copy of your personal report at http://www.annualcreditreport.com/ or, if you have already received your free annual report, you may purchase one at www.experian.com/reportaccess. Your lender’s adverse action notice might also direct you to www.Experian.com if they used an Experian report in making their decision. In that case, you would qualify for a free report based on the adverse action.
Credit a reports received through most credit monitoring services also include a report number or instructions to obtain a report that includes the number and dispute instructions.
Many disputes can be entered directly online, which directs the request immediately to the source of the information and can speed up the process for you.
