What happens when information is deleted by a different credit reporting agency

Dear Max,

If I had information disputed on one credit report and it was deleted; will it be deleted from the other two bureaus also? If not what will I need to do to have this same information disputed and deleted off of my credit reports?

- NTO

Dear NTO,

This is one of those "it depends" questions, and it depends on why the information was deleted and by whom.

If the lender, after reviewing its records, deletes the information, the lender is required by the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) to notify other credit reporting companies to which it reported the information to remove it as well.

If the lender fails to respond to the dispute within the time allowed by law, or the credit reporting company removes the information from its records for some other reason, the other credit reporting companies will not be aware of the change.

In those instances, you will need to contact the other credit reporting companies and dispute the information independently through each of them.

Thanks for asking.
