Dear Max,
I called the opt out telephone phone number, 888 5OPT OUT (888 567 8688), to opt out and gave all my personal information, but I am still getting credit card offers. Should I be concerned? How can I verify that I am on the opt-out "list?"
- MGM
Dear MGM,
You don’t need to be concerned. Because of the process for making a preapproved offer, it might take some time for you to see a substantial decrease in the number of offers you receive. You also need to know that opting out will not stop all credit card offers.
When you opt out, your personal information is immediately blocked so it won’t appear on any new mailing lists. However, your mailing information cannot be removed from lists that already have been prepared.
The process of compiling a mailing list, using it to address offers, and mailing those offers can take the company six months or more, so your mailing information probably already is on offers that are waiting to be mailed. You still will receive those offers.
You should see a significant reduction in the volume of offers in your mailbox after those already in the mail stream have been delivered.
Opting out only removes you from mailing lists screened by the national credit reporting companies for credit related offers. Some lenders create their own mailing lists or obtain them from other sources. You will need to contact them individually to request that they remove you from their lists. If you are receiving non-credit related offers, you may contact the Direct Marketing Association, www.the-dma.org, to further remove yourself from the market.
Thanks for asking.
