Getting your credit report after your application has been declined

Dear Max,

I cannot find where to go on this site to get a copy of my credit report because I was denied credit. How do I get started?

- HIE

Dear HIE,

The denial letter, also called a declination letter, you received should have included instructions to request a copy of your personal credit report from the credit reporting company that they used in making their decision.

If you did not receive instructions, go to www.experian.com/reportaccess. Click on “Get my report now” and complete the form, filling in the “denied credit” section. You can also call 1 888 EXPERIAN (1 888 397 3742) and select the option for having been declined. You will be asked to identify the company that made the inquiry. If there is no inquiry on the Experian file, you will need to pay a processing fee or request your free report from www.annualcreditreport.com.

If you request your report online you will receive it instantly via a secure Internet connection. If you request your report by telephone, it will be mailed to you.

Thanks for asking.
