Cybersecurity thought-leaders from many industries gathered in Washington, D.C. this week for the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) Global Privacy Summit. The Experian Data Breach Resolution team was on hand to talk about data breach preparedness and how 2014 was a game-changing year for everyone concerned with cyber security.

We fielded a stellar group of experts in our panel discussion “2014 Forever Changed Breach Response: How to Adjust Your Strategy & Preparedness Plan,” held on March 5. The discussion featured guests Cy Fenton of the National Retail Federation’s IT Security Council, and chief information officer and senior vice president of IT for Books-A-Million, Inc.; and Ponemon Institute chairman and founder Larry Ponemon, Ph.D., CIPP; along with myself.

Highly publicized data breaches in 2014 brought public scrutiny to bear on corporate security practices, and consumers, regulators and investors have begun demanding greater accountability. Companies must now devote as much attention, care and planning to post-incident response as they do to prevention. The breach response approach must evolve accordingly.

Our panelists provided insights and guidance valuable across all industries, with the mega retail breaches of 2014 providing lessons about how organizations have been handling breaches and what they need to do differently. We also delved into the latest Ponemon Institute research on the current state of corporate breach response and how consumer expectations have changed.
