A precursor to our predictions

2015 Forecast White Paper

It’s almost the end of 2014 and a time to reflect back on the year and look ahead. With this in mind, we are again going to release a white paper with a few predictions on what the future holds in the data breach industry in 2015.  We put pen to paper with a forecast last year for the first time, and had a lot of fun doing it. Not only did it give us a chance to digest and analyze all that had happened in the industry but also provided another opportunity to communicate information that can help companies better understand and prepare for a breach.

I can’t let the cat out of the bag yet with all of our predictions but one of the most interesting areas we address is the Internet of Things (IoT), which represents when an object is connected to the Internet and can relay information as well as be controlled from anywhere. This connectivity means more data, gathered from more places. You can easily guess that a platform that has data translates into a breach surface that is of interest to cyber thieves. As more businesses tap into this form of connectivity in 2015, they will need to include it in their cyber security efforts as well.

It’s been a busy year for Experian Data Breach Resolution as we will have by year end handled more than 3,000 breaches, an increase from 2013. We continually are learning and gleaning insights from these breaches, which contributed to what we predict will occur next year in the industry. Our white paper will be available for download on December 1 on our resources page at https://www.experian.com/data-breach/data-breach-information.html.
