These Are the Best Credit Cards for Sports Fans

After today's NBA draft, basketball teams start making moves and trades over the summer. Are you a Spurs fan worried that Kawhi Leonard will never wear the black and silver jersey again? Or a Cavs faithful who's probably seen the last of Lebron James in Ohio?

American Express offers a service just for you: Jersey Assurance. If you buy a jersey for your favorite hoops star using an American Express card and that player switches teams within 90 days of your purchase, AmEx will supply you with a replacement jersey free of charge.

But that's not the only credit card geared toward fans. If you're a sports lover, there are several credit cards that can make your fan experience better and get you more rewards and perks for all the dough you spend on sporting events.

1. Citi® ThankYou® Preferred Card

Annual Fee: None
APR: 15.24% to 25.24% variable, based on creditworthiness. (Updated on 10/2/18.)

The Citi® ThankYou® Preferred Card is no longer available on Experian's CreditMatch marketplace.

In 2016, it cost an average of $502.84 to take a family of four to an NFL game (the cost of two adult and two child tickets, plus food, drinks, parking and a souvenir). For an NBA game, the average cost was $339.02. That's a lot of scratches to take in a ball game, and you should be getting maximum rewards on those purchases.

The Citi ThankYou Preferred Card offers 2 points per $1 spent on dining and entertainment purchases, which includes sporting events. (You earn 1 point per $1 on all other purchases.) Cardholders also get special access to the best tickets at certain concerts and sporting events through the Citi Private Pass program.

2. Citi Premier℠ Card

Annual Fee: $95, waived the first year
APR: 16.49% to 25.49% variable, based on creditworthiness

The Citi Premier℠ Card is no longer available on Experian's CreditMatch marketplace.

The ThankYou Premier card is similar to the Preferred offering, in that you earn 2 points per $1 spent on dining and entertainment purchases. But with this card, you also earn 3 points per $1 spent on travel (which can come in handy if you like to chase your favorite teams around the country), as well as 1 point per $1 spent on everything else. You can also rack up big rewards faster, thanks to the card's 50,000 point bonus once you spend $4,000 in the first three months.

3. NFL® Extra Points Credit Card

Annual Fee: None
APR: 16.49% to 26.49% variable, based on creditworthiness

Can't get enough of the gridiron? This Barclaycard lets you earn 2 points per $1 spent on NFL purchases, including tickets, in-stadium purchases, at team pro shops at NFLShop.com. Earn 1 point per $1 spent on everything else.

You also get 20% off on all purchases at NFLShop.com, and the opportunity to redeem points for game tickets and once-in-a-lifetime experiences like tickets to the Super Bowl. The card is also offering a 6-month 0% promo rate on NFL ticket purchases.

4. MLB® Cash Rewards Mastercard from Bank of America

Annual Fee: None
APR: 14.49% to 24.49% variable, based on creditworthiness

This card is basically identical to the BoA's Cash Rewards Credit Card. The only difference? You can choose a card featuring your favorite Major League Baseball team.

The rewards on the card are still pretty good, though: 3% cash back on gas purchases up to $2,500 a year, 2% cash back at grocery and wholesale clubs, and 1% cash back on everything else. You can also earn a $150 cash bonus by spending $500 on the card within the first three months.
