USAA® Rewards™ Visa Signature® Card: Get Rewards on Gas and Dining

At Experian, consumer credit and finance education is our priority. This post may contain links and references to one or more of our partners, but we provide an objective view to help you make the best decisions. For more information, see our Editorial Policy.

Available to military service members and their families who belong to USAA, this card offers double points on gas and dining with no annual fee. However, points aren't the same thing as earning cash back, and while these rewards can be redeemed in a few different ways, their value is unclear. That can make it difficult to determine how much value you'll get from the card.

Experian Review

Are you a USAA member with a good to excellent credit score? If so, you may be eligible for the USAA® Rewards Visa Signature® Card, which offers double points on gas and dining purchases. There's no annual fee, no foreign transaction fees, and a variety of travel perks and benefits. But depending on your credit score, the card may have a high annual percentage rate (APR), and the value of the points you earn is unclear.

Earn Double Points on Dining and Gas

The USAA® Rewards Visa Signature® Card offers 2 points per $1 spent on dining and gas purchases, and 1 point per $1 spent elsewhere. The amount of points you can earn is unlimited, and points never expire as long as your account is in good standing.

Points can be redeemed toward the purchase of airline tickets or cruise tickets, as well as for merchandise and gift cards. Feeling generous? Redeem your points for donations to participating charities or transfer them to any other USAA® Rewards™ card holder.

If these options don't appeal to you, you can redeem points for cash to be credited to your USAA® Rewards Visa Signature® Card account or deposited to your USAA checking or savings account.

The available merchandise and gift card rewards, as well as participating charities, are subject to change, so you'll need to visit the USAA® Rewards Service Center to see what's available. The value of rewards points varies depending on which rewards you choose, so it's difficult to assess the value of points before you redeem them (or estimate how valuable they might be to you before you apply for the card). The process for redeeming points for cash back with this card can be complicated compared with credit cards that automatically apply cash back to your account. (If you're looking for a card with similar military and travel benefits that offers straightforward cash back rewards, you might want to consider the USAA® Cashback Rewards Plus American Express® Card.)

Low Rates and Fees

This card is for users with good to excellent credit, and if you have an excellent credit score, you may enjoy an APR as low as 11.40%—much lower than the national average of 16.68%. On the other hand, if your credit score is good but not great, you might end up with an APR of 27.40%. That's significantly higher than the national average and can quickly get very costly if you expect to carry a balance on the card.

The USAA® Rewards Visa Signature® Card features the same APR for purchases, balance transfers and cash advances, unlike many cards that charge much higher APRs for cash advances than for purchases or transfers. There's no penalty APR either, so while a late payment will hurt your credit score, it won't hike your interest rate going forward.

There's no annual fee nor any foreign transaction fees, making the USAA® Rewards Visa Signature® Card a good option if you're traveling abroad in the near future. Balance transfer and cash advance fees are 3% of the amount transferred or advanced. The fee is waived if you transfer your cash advance electronically to a USAA deposit account.

Special Features for Members of the Military

Members of the military who are USAA account holders will enjoy a Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA) interest rate of 4% on charges made on their USAA® Rewards Visa Signature® Card before their active duty. This is lower than the standard 6% the SCRA requires. If you've got a high balance on another credit card and know you'll be entering active duty soon, you could apply to transfer the balance to the USAA® Rewards Visa Signature® Card before your active duty starts to get the lower interest rate. Keep in mind that this rate does not apply to new charges made once active duty begins, and you must submit your request for the reduced rate within 180 days of finishing your active duty.

USAA also has several military affiliate card designs you can choose from to show your pride in your branch of the armed forces. Just select the design you prefer once you're approved for the card.

Safety Features for Travel and Purchases

The USAA® Rewards Visa Signature® Card has some valuable travel benefits you'll appreciate. Buy your travel ticket with this card, and you'll be covered for up to $500,000 of travel accident losses of life, limb, hearing, speech or sight. Use your USAA® Rewards Visa Signature® Card to rent a car and you'll get auto rental coverage for physical damage, theft, towing and loss-of-use charges, so you can decline collision coverage from the rental company and save some cash. If your checked baggage is delayed during a trip you paid for with the card, you can receive up to $100 a day in reimbursement for essential items you bought to replace your missing items.

When you shop with the USAA® Rewards Visa Signature® Card, you'll enjoy additional warranty protection on covered purchases. Extend the U.S. manufacturer's warranty of three years or less for an extra year for added peace of mind.

Download the USAA mobile app, available for both Android and iOS, to get alerts about your account and manage your transactions. You can set up a variety of notifications, pay your bill, report your card lost or stolen and more. The mobile app allows for biometric log-in with voice, fingerprint or facial recognition, saving you time and keeping your account secure. Add the USAA® Rewards Visa Signature® Card to your mobile device to conveniently shop with Apple Pay, Google Pay or Samsung Pay.

The USAA® Rewards Visa Signature® Card has zero liability, so unauthorized purchases aren't your responsibility. And if you ever fall victim to identity theft, USAA® has resolution services to help. They'll replace your compromised card, alert the three major credit bureaus (Experian, TransUnion and Equifax) to the fraud, and reimburse you for up to $1,000 in covered expenses related to recovering your identity.

Is This Card Right for You?

The USAA® Rewards Visa Signature® Card faces stiff competition from similar rewards cards, some of which offer sign-up bonuses and cash back on all purchases without the hassle of redeeming points. It may be a good fit for USAA members who spend a lot of money on gas and restaurants and don't want to pay annual or foreign transaction fees. That said, if you have the good or excellent credit score that's required to get this card, there are plenty of options out there offering better rewards and benefits.
