Experian Review

The U.S. Bank Cash+™ Visa Signature® Card offers major earnings potential—if you're willing to work for it. Every quarter, you can sign up for rotating categories and earn either 2% or 5% cash back, which can add up fast if you use the card for your everyday purchases. All other eligible purchases earn 1% back, which isn't very competitive with other cash back credit cards. That low base rewards rate means this card might be best for those who are proactive and willing to enroll each quarter to maximize cash back. It's handy that you can get your rewards at any time, and with no minimum amount required.

Plus, the card has no annual fee to eat into your rewards. It does, however, have a foreign transaction fee on purchases made outside the U.S., so it's not ideal for those who need a card to spend while abroad since the fee can add up fast.

The annual percentage rate (APR) on purchases ranges quite a bit depending on your creditworthiness. It begins at 15.49%, which is competitive, but it goes all the way up to 25.49% for those with poorer credit, which is steep. If you need to transfer a balance, the U.S. Bank Cash+™ Visa Signature® Card offers a 0% introductory APR on balance transfers for a full year.

Solid Intro Bonus and No Annual Fee

The U.S. Bank Cash+™ Visa Signature® Card comes with several enticing introductory offers. For one, there's 0% APR on balance transfers made within 60 days from account opening for the first 12 billing cycles. If you're tackling high interest debt on another credit card, you could transfer the balance to this card and take a year to pay it off without accruing any additional interest. There is no intro APR offer on purchases, however, so be aware that you won't get a break from interest in that regard.

There is another introductory perk: If you spend $500 on eligible purchases with the credit card within the first 90 days of opening the account, you'll get a $150 bonus. You shouldn't spend the money unless you were already planning on it, but it's a nice way to earn free cash if you already have $500 in expenses to pay.

Multiple Ways to Earn Cash Back

This Visa credit card can earn you loads of cash back if you're willing to follow some guidelines. At the start of every quarter, you select two spending categories, and you'll earn 5% cash back on the first $2,000 you spend in those categories. Some cash back card issuers choose the rotating categories for you, so it's nice that this U.S. Bank credit card lets you select the categories that are likely to benefit you the most.

Additionally, on an ongoing basis, you'll earn 2% on one everyday spending category, such as purchases at gas stations, restaurants or grocery stores. With this much cash back, it might be worth putting everyday purchases on your credit card and then paying them off right away before interest kicks in.

Each quarter, it's up to you to enroll in the categories of your choosing, so you have to stay on top of it if you want to earn this extra cash. If you forget to enroll in the category, you'll only get a 1% rewards rate for the purchases. You can opt to receive reminders, but you might want to create your own calendar alerts so you don't forget to activate a spending category.

Aside from the rotating bonus categories, nearly all of your other purchases with the card will net you 1% cash back. This means that even if you're not spending in one of the designated rotating categories, you'll still earn rewards with every swipe.

You aren't required to have a minimum to redeem your cash back rewards, and you can get it anytime in one of three forms: as a statement credit, as a rewards card or as a direct deposit in your U.S. Bank savings or checking account.

Track Your Spending and Cash Back With Mobile App

U.S. Bank's mobile app on iOS and Android makes it easy to stay on top of your card activity and cash back rewards. The app lets you view all your credit card transactions, and you can use it to pay your bills, make transfers and set travel notices.

From the app, you can set up mobile alerts that help you keep track of your balances, transactions and statements, which is ideal for those who want to keep a close eye on card activity—especially if you have any authorized users on the account. The app also offers personalized insights based on your spending habits, giving you advice on how to optimize your finances and do even better with spending and saving.

U.S. Bank's mobile app also has several safety features. You can opt to log in with either a username and password or a fingerprint. You can also lock and unlock your credit card if you've misplaced or lost it and want to make sure it isn't used for any unauthorized purchases. If you enable the app to have access to your phone's location, it can sense if you're near your credit card. This can help avoid fraudulent purchases and prevent declined transactions when you're traveling since the bank can tell if the card is with you.

Authorized-User Policy

U.S. Bank permits you to add an authorized user to your account if you'd like to give a family member a card linked to your account. According to its authorized user policy, U.S. Bank allows you to add up to four authorized users to your account, with one card per person. The individual will receive their own card with your U.S. Bank credit card number on it, and you're liable for all transactions on the account.

This means your authorized user gets you into more debt than you can handle, you're on the hook. Carrying a high balance you can't pay off will cost you in interest and potentially harm your credit score. So be absolutely sure you can trust the authorized user before you add them to your account.

Is This Card Right for You?

If most of your credit card purchases are for everyday expenses such as gas, groceries or restaurants, the U.S. Bank Cash+™ Visa Signature® Card can help you earn plenty of rewards. There are three reward tiers, 5%, 2% and 1%. The two more generous categories rotate every quarter and earn you a competitive cash back rate. Unlike some issuers, you get the flexibility to choose which categories you'll earn that cash back rate for. But you have to manually select your categories every quarter, and if you forget, you're stuck with the mediocre 1% rate on all purchases. So if you are willing to put in some effort and stay on top of this rewards program, you can definitely rack up plentiful cash back rewards.

Due to the foreign transaction fee, it's not optimal for frequent world travelers. But if you need an everyday spending card, the rewards program and lack of annual fee make it a compelling addition to your wallet.
