Experian Review

If you fly with Delta Air Lines frequently, the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express offers many convenient and money-saving perks.

From a free checked bag and priority boarding to miles you can redeem for Delta flights without blackout dates, you can easily save plenty of cash with this card. There's no annual fee the first year, and once it kicks in during the second year, your card's benefits can easily make up for the fee if you use it regularly. Plus, the generous sign-up bonus offers an opportunity for free travel. If you're airline-agnostic, however, you might feel constrained by all of the card's Delta-specific benefits and rewards. This credit card also isn't ideal if you plan to carry a high balance since the annual percentage rate (APR) is a bit steep.

Get Your Next Flight Free

When you get your Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express, you'll earn 30,000 bonus miles after you spend $1,000 with the card in the first 3 months of account opening. If you have any big purchases coming up, you can put them on your card during this introductory period. Just make sure you can pay them off quickly to make sure you get the bonus without going into debt or accruing much in interest—and definitely don't spend the $1,000 if you don't need to.

Depending on how you redeem your bonus miles, you could earn one or more round-trip flights, potentially saving you hundreds of dollars. You'll also get a $50 statement credit if you make a Delta purchase during the first three months of your account opening. Who doesn't like free money?

Once you begin using your card, you'll earn 1 mile for every $1 you spend, plus double the miles on any Delta purchases, which can help you rack up rewards faster. When you're ready to book travel with your rewards, you can pay for your flight entirely with your miles if you have enough saved up. But unlike many other travel rewards programs, you can also use the card's Pay with Miles feature to pay for a portion of your Delta airfare. To do this, you only need a minimum of 5,000 miles saved—you don't need to have enough miles to pay for the entire flight, and there are no blackout dates to work around. This lets you put your reward miles to work faster than with airlines that require you to fully pay for travel with either dollars or points.

Travel Safely and More Affordably With Delta

If you tend to hop around from airline to airline depending on price and convenience, this might not be the card for you. But if you're a Delta devotee, it can pay off big time to have this card in your wallet.

Whenever you fly Delta, this card grants you one free checked bag each way on your travels. Checking a bag one way normally costs $30, so that's a savings of $60 for every round-trip flight you make. In other words, you only have to make two round-trip flights a year to get your money's worth for the annual fee.

When you travel abroad, you'll pay no foreign transaction fees with this card, which can save you a lot of money when making purchases in another currency since some other cards charge a fee for every swipe. Have kids? You can also save money through American Express' Destination Family program, which offers family-friendly benefits and discounts on purchases with certain travel companies.

The card also offers Main Cabin 1 priority boarding, allowing you to board the plane sooner and have a better chance of finding room for your carry-on luggage. Cardholders can also take advantage of a 20% discount on in-flight purchases. Through January 29, 2020, cardholders can visit Delta Sky Clubs at airports with an exclusive per-visit rate of $29 per person.

When you book travel as an American Express cardholder, you can take advantage of the Lowest Rate Guaranteed policy on hotel bookings. This means if you book through American Express and find the same hotel room for a better price elsewhere, you'll get a refund for the difference.

Additionally, the card's Global Assist Hotline is available to help you with travel-related needs when you're far from home. The service can help you with lost passports, lost luggage, customs issues and even provide emergency medical or legal referrals if you're in a bind. If you're planning to get a rental car while traveling, this credit card can protect you with its car rental loss and damage insurance.

Cardholders also get Entertainment Access, a perk that gives you exclusive presale access to tickets for Broadway shows, concerts, sports games and more. You'll also get invites for member-only events in certain cities. If you're planning a trip to a city with must-see events, this can be a great way to get hold of in-demand tickets.

Shopping Perks From American Express

The Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express comes in handy even when you're not traveling. With the card's extended warranty program, on eligible purchases you can get up to one year added to the original manufacturer's warranty, protecting your items for longer. If you make a big purchase and something goes wrong after the original warranty ends, this can save you cash and headaches.

The card also comes with purchase protection. If you make an eligible purchase with the card, you'll be protected from accidental damage or theft for 90 days, depending on where you live.

You'll also be able to take advantage of American Express' Pay it Plan it feature. The Plan it part of the program allows you to break up large purchases over time. You'll pay a fixed monthly fee and no interest charges, and you can do up to 10 of these payment plans a month. It's ideal for big purchases like a sofa, television or expensive plane ticket that might take you a few months to pay off. The Pay it part, on the other hand, lets you quickly pay off small purchases under $100 via the American Express app, and you can still earn points on your card.

American Express cardholders also get a complimentary membership to ShopRunner, a service that gives you free two-day shipping and free returns on many purchases at over 100 major retailers.

Manage Your Account on the Go

The American Express app is a free tool available to all cardholders, and it makes it simple to manage your account and track your rewards any time. Through the app, you can view up to six months of your transaction history, create purchase alerts for any card activity, set up payment alerts for when your bill is due or late and directly pay your credit card bill. The American Express app also allows you to set up Apple Pay™. You can also view and save exclusive dining and shopping offers in the American Express app.

Less Flexibility Than General Travel Credit Cards

One of the main drawbacks to this credit card—or any airline- or hotel-specific credit card for that matter—is that you don't have a lot of options for redeeming your miles. While it's possible to redeem Delta SkyMiles for more than just flights, you typically won't get much value with those alternatives.

If you fly Delta frequently enough that you're fine with just redeeming your points for flights with the airline and can take advantage of the travel benefits, this card can be a great fit. But if you want more redemption options, you may be better off with a general travel credit card, where rewards can be redeemed for flights with any airline.

Authorized-User Policy

As a cardholder, you are permitted to obtain additional cards for authorized users. The authorized user has to be at least 13 years old and cannot have ever had a previous defaulted account with American Express. Keep in mind that you'll be responsible for an authorized user's spending, so only add authorized users whom you trust to use the card responsibly.

Is This Card Right for You?

The Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express is an excellent choice if you fly fairly regularly with Delta. The card offers a big sign-up bonus that's worth one or more round-trip flights, plus special perks you can take advantage of every time you fly with the airline. That said, the card is best if you're fine having less flexibility with rewards redemption than you'd get with a general travel credit card.
