Hilton Honors American Express Ascend Card

The card also gets you gets you automatic silver status on your Marriott/SPG membership, as well as one free night each year (redemption level at or under 35,000 points) at a huge number of properties, thanks to the recent Marriott/Starwood merger.

Cardholders earn 6 points per $1 spent on eligible purchases at participating Marriott and Starwood properties, as well as 2 points per $1 spent on all other eligible purchases. No foreign-transaction fees make it a good card to keep in your wallet for international travel, as well.

Barclaycard Arrival Plus® World Elite Mastercard®

You'll accrue 3 points per $1 spent on all travel purchases, including gas stations; 2 points per $1 spent on dining out and entertainment; and 1 point per $1 spent on everything else.

ThankYou® Points are worth one cent each if redeemed for gift cards at thankyou.com, but if you use them for travel you'll get an even bigger return. The 50,000 bonus points are worth $625 on purchases on any airline—with no blackout dates—as long as they're booked through the ThankYou® Travel Center.

Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card

You will also earn 2 miles per $1 spent on every purchase—and a hefty 10 miles per $1 spent on hotels booked through hotels.com/venture.

You'll also receive up to $100 application fee credit for Global Entry or TSA Pre-Check, a perk that's typically available on more premium rewards cards that carry a premium annual fee in the hundreds of dollars. Capital One also recently announced an exciting benefit for travel lovers: now you can transfer miles to 12 different airline frequent flyer partners. That can amp up the value of your miles because a cash ticket price could be high, but an award price could be a lot lower in equivalent points.
