Despite significant economic and credit-market challenges, retail lending levels for 2009 remained comparable to previous years. In 2009, more than $78.9 billion in new retail credit was originated, which is only a 9 percent decrease from the $86.7 billion that was originated in 2008. Despite this decrease, retail lending has been relatively unaffected compared with other credit products.
