Egyptian unrest boosts traffic to Al Jazeera English
With the start of the protests and demonstrations in Egypt, visits to the English Al Jazeera website have increased as many in the US turned to the Middle Eastern news source for coverage. The volume of visits increased 6x on January 28, 2011 as compared to the previous day and as of February 15th, remain 125% higher than a month ago as anti-government demonstrations continue in other areas of the region. The news of the resignation of Hosni Mubarak, the Egyptian president also drive a spike in traffic to Al Jazeera – English, which ranked 16th among Broadcast Media websites on Feb. 11th, up from 95th on Jan. 21st.

Last week, search and social networks were the main traffic drivers of visits to Al Jazeera – English and referred 28% and 12% of all visits, respectively. Both of these sources were strong for customer acquisition, with 26% and 44% of the visitors referred new to the website in the past 30 days. Among the top 10 industries, Multimedia & Video websites like YouTube delivered the highest share of new visitors at 55% for the week ending Feb 12, 2011.
