Online excitement for Tron Legacy

The anxiously awaited (confession – I bought tickets a month ago) sequel to Tron, Tron:Legacy opened in theaters after midnight last night. Naturally, with so much excitement about the movie, many fans were searching for information about Tron:Legacy online in the US and the UK. Variations of search queries for ‘tron’ and ‘tron legacy’ jumped 100% and 88%, respectively during the week ending November 27, 2010 as the release date approached. Last week, there was an additional increase of 35% in search term query variations for both ‘tron’ and ‘tron legacy’.

Over the past 4 weeks, the top variations of ‘tron legacy’ were around searches for the trailer, soundtrack and reviews. Additionally, searchers were seeking Tron:Legacy themed wallpaper for their desktops, costumes and games. There are some interesting SEM opportunities around the variations, such as ‘tron legacy costume’ and ‘daft punk tron legacy’, where the success rates were only 41% and 31%, respectively. The success rate measures the percentage of searches where a user clicks-through to visit a website, highlighting where improvements are needed to serve desired results and content.

The top destination for searches on ‘tron legacy’ is YouTube to view trailers and other video clips, followed by Disney’s Tron:Legacy website with additional videos & content, links to buy tickets and Light Cycle game. The Internet Movie Database and Wikipedia also attracted curious Internet users which were searching for information about the new movie (and probably the history of the original film from 1982).

The search term sequence summary around queries for ‘tron legacy’ reveal interest around Olivia Wilde, reviews for the movie, trailers and the soundtrack from Daft Punk. There is also interest for sports and other films such as Inception and The Green Lantern.

  1. It is good that you highlighted “tron legacy” search phrases are on the rise. But why don’t google and other major search engines prohibit search results which take users to torrent download links of the illegal versions of the movie. This will benefit the movie producers from losing cash.
