Case Study – Social Security Administration

The Social Security Administration may not be the first website that comes to mind when thinking about search or social, but these two sources combined accounted for half of the traffic referrals in October 2010. Search engines referred 43% of the upstream traffic to the website of the Social Security Administration and of those visitors, 72% were new or had not visited the website in the past 30 days. Google represented the majority of the search referrals with 24% of the upstream traffic with a new visitor rate of 73%. Each of the major search engines exhibited a strong performance as a customer acquisition channel, delivering a new visitor rate between 67% and 76%. Social Networks followed as the 2nd ranked referral source with nearly 7% of the upstream traffic, mostly due to the popularity of Facebook. Some of these referrals are driven by the overall popularity of Facebook and tendency of visitors to return often to the site throughout the day, but The Social Security Administration does have a presence on Facebook which also helps to drive interest and visits to their own website.
