Facebook Reaches Top Ranking in US
Facebook reached an important milestone for the week ending March 13, 2010 and surpassed Google in the US to become the most visited website for the week. Facebook.com recently reached the #1 ranking on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day as well as the weekend of March 6th and 7th. The market share of visits to Facebook.com increased 185% last week as compared to the same week in 2009, while visits to Google.com increased 9% during the same time frame. Together Facebook.com and Google.com accounted for 14% of all US Internet visits last week.

Facebook Unseats Google As Most-Visited Site
Although the "thud" wasn't verified until this afternoon, it seems that an online giant
I wonder what type of visits are the fastest growing for both sites- What share of Google visits were from toolbar searches? How does Facebook’s YOY change in visitors from mobile devices compare to Google’s? Who’s beating who on getting new engaged or converted visits? It would be cool to see how battles over specific segments are playing out, who each company values most, and why.
So where is Yahoo in all this? I’ve always read that Yahoo consistently gets more traffic than Yahoo, but Google gets more searches. Can you help set the record straight?
This is interesting, so Google is at second place now…
What does this really mean in terms of internet dominance?
Is this growth by Facebook sustainable? or it will go belly up like Myspace when the next best thing launch.?
Facebook Surpassed Google

It seemed to me that it never will happen
Just to clarify ‘Most visited’ = Unique users? It’s a measure of all FB pages versus all G, or just the index pages?
Thanks!
Amazing to see how fast traffic for FB went up in the last year. That’s what every web company is dreaming about!

Facebook.com Beats Out Google.com In Web Visitors This Week
Hitwise reports that Facebook.com surpassed Google.com in visits to become the most visited website for the week ending in March 13, 2010. It is not the first time this has happened, on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day…
Sounds interesting, until you realize that a significant portion of Google’s users don’t go to http://www.google.com — they search from their browsers’ toolbars.
The comparison is worse if that graph only includes the main Google page and not GMail, Google Maps, and all those other properties. But it’s not clear how “deep” the comparison goes.
who really cares ’bout being # 1.
key is to stay Top 10 for a long long run.
facebook überholt Google in USA
In der Woche vom 8. bis 13. März 2010 erreichte facebook erstmals eine höhere Besucheranzahl als Google.

Is this just GOOGLE.com domain or subdomains? It can’t be their entire suite of sites/tools (which includs gmail)… and yes, most people use their toolbars and don’t go to the Google site.
What is the sample size?
@Andrew Kantor
Searches originating from a browser toolbar will still end up on Google, so those would be included in the traffic numbers. But good point about the other properties. Is that comparison just for google.com, or does it include all of the others. What about YouTube?
My guess is that these properties were not counted and that Google is still WAY out in front.
Facebook Becomes Most Visited Site Beating Google

But you have to remember that Facebook, is pretty much JUST Facebook, Google, is how many different sites? Google Earth, Google Maps, etc, It will be fun to watch and see how they react though!
I agree facebook is growing rapidly worldwide. I think much of the growth comes from log-in with your facebook feature, since recently adapted by so many internet services.

Facebook tops Google as most-visited site in US?
Is this a one-day fluke, or is there finally a new king of the hill after years of dominance by Google?…
Having the highest number of hits during Christmas gives you a nice fuzzy feeling, but comparing Facebook to Google is like comparing the number of phone calls to the number of people who read a newspaper on a given day. A more worthwhile comparison would be Facebook against MySpace or Gmail, or Google against Yahoo or Bing.

Facebook as a Search Engine?

Andrew,
When you search thru the browsers’ toolbar, it is still counted as traffic to google.com since the search is passed to the google search engine
Im pretty sure facebook is going to be around a while before it flops like myspace did. Twitter came along afterwards but i think most twitter uses then reverted back to facebook.
I’m pretty confident to say that this will not last. Facebook will eventually flop just like all the other major social sites have in the past (think myspace). Google on the other hand may be around for ever. I mean think about it, when you tell someone to look something up on the internet you don’t say it like that, you say just ‘google’ it. Also google has it’s own religion now, just google it.
I wonder what type of visits are the fastest growing for both sites- What share of Google visits were from toolbar searches? don’t think about USA only,in this month of july indian facebook gets boomed…more than million people joined in various community

Facebook definitely has its share of games, and at times it is a pain to avoid all the achievement notices that other users broadcast. Basically, who can make the coolest, most friendly, and advanced website?

Facebook is aiming for 600 billion by next month.
It’s really amazing how quickly Facebook got up there. March of 09 it looked to be around 2.3%, one year later over 7%! What a huge growth. I’m really looking forward to observing the future growth of Facebook in the upcoming months and years
I’m pretty confident to say that this will not last. Facebook will eventually flop just like all the other major social sites have in the past (think myspace). Google on the other hand may be around for ever. I mean think about it, when you tell someone to look something up on the internet you don’t say it like that, you say just ‘google’ it. Even if Facebook got beaten by Google by a good margin, this is hardly a setback for them. The massive user base Facebook has gathered in just a few years is nothing short of amazing. Remember, they have only been around since 2004. Google, on the other hand, has had since 1998 to build their empire
Facebook has gone up like clockwork. Mr.Zuckerberg’s social network site strucked people from all around the world. I believe Facebook still has to reach its full potential. When you think of countries where facebook is banned. countries such as syria, iran & pakistan. Despite Google has been here a much longer time than Facebook, it still amazes me Facebook could top google. Well at the end both of them are happy because they are #1 in both their fields. Social networking and search engines respectively.
The market share of visits to Facebook.com increased 185% last week as compared to the same week in 2009 while visits to Google.com increased 9% during the same time frame.
Good to see…..
Thanks. This is just what I was looking for!
Facebook should open their own search engine.
Nice review. I agree facebook is growing rapidly worldwide. I think much of the growth comes from log-in with your facebook feature, since recently adapted by so many internet services.
Just watched the film about how Facebook all started. Make you wonder what the next big internet site will be. I remember sending a fax via my laptop on a beach in Cuba, 22 years ago and was blown away by the technology. Will be interesting to see what this new generation coming online will produce.

Facebook has great user free and entertainment links and activities to do. Google can’t be beated with its database. Just a public choice. Facebook can’t beat Google on Money!
Facebook is still on top…but it seems like twitter is right behind. Looks like people are seeking more real time information on the web these days.
Why Facebook will take down Google.
Any business that uses Fan Pages or Google to get traffic to their site needs to read this blog, huge announcement regarding BING and Facebook. …
Thanks for publishing this graphic, Heather. It seems that Facebook is going to dominate the game. Who had thought that Mr. Zuckerberg would create the “next big thing” after Google.. Facebook has so much more potential than Google nowadays and frankly I think Google should keep their eyeballs focussed on a takeover of Twitter if they want to stay in the “game”. If they won’t buy an existing succesful social media network like Twitter they’re lost as when Facebook will develop a kind of search engine I don’t think Google can’t keep their pants up.. Be smart Google; buy Twitter!
Its just a matter of time before Facebook becomes the new “king of the internet” and controls everything it can.
I think facebook is here to stay…you’ll see more and more copycats, but they won’t last.

I believe that the traffic numbers are high than Google’s because of the number of people that
revisit the site each day. For instance my wife gets some type of notification on her Iphone each
time one of her friends post something to their wall which she then goes and takes a look at.
When you use Google you may only use it once a day when you need to look up something or grab an address or phone for a local business.
Definetly two different types of traffic as far as the mindset (entertainment vs. buying) the user is in when in he/she visits Facebook or Google.
facebook is one of the sites that will be on top 2011 and 90% sure that will have more clicks than google
Good to see Google hegemony challenged. People are starting to use social networks more and more instead of search engines, turning the tables in the internet industry.
Facebook wont be like Myspace in my opinion because what myspace lacked is improvement we rarely saw anything new there but facebook is improving weekly developers are having hard time to update their applications as facebook api gets new functions monthly.
Facebook is good how it is and it really entertains people.

I believe that the social networking corner of the web will eventually take over the search engines. As soon as facebook starts to offer something similar to what google can, then people will have a one stop shop and will no longer have a need for google and the other search engines. They can do the social networking and searching all from one place. Monopoly coming perhaps?
Facebook is the new god apparently! Things have changed so much over the years. Imagine 10 years from now
I don’t think Google and Facebook will be in direct competition this coming year or two, they serve different kind of people and different services. Even FB launches their own search engine, people would still prefer Google. The same on if Google try another social site, FB is already established.
But have you ever imagined why the question has come up right now? Why not that came 2 to 3 yrs ago? It shows there is something wrong there with Google or there is something very good there with FB. Anyway I think Google should be aware of Facebook and its rapid progress. And should not try to interfere in social bzness.
Well if now just facebook was as easy to monetize as google. Then I could understand the hype around it but for now so am I just annoyed by the valuations it keeps getting.
Yeah I know control the traffic and you got the monies.
-H
Do you think Facebook has peaked now? I don’t see how they could possibly get any more popular, between going neck-and-neck with Google for #1 and having a blockbuster movie made about them.
Plus, issues with security and privacy are starting to scare users. I think it’s only a matter of time before they end up getting “Myspaced.”
Face book is growing very rapidly.More people are joining face book these days. Both face book and Google are good.
Facebook is good social network site where we easily share our ideas with our friends it is good medium to communicate with each other.I like your artical thanks.
Facebook may be strong at the moment, but I think people would move quickly if something better came up. Its just boring.
Social networking sites are in abundance but Face Book is unique one, that’s why it is growing so rapidly.
Helpful advises above. I have noticed that many people are using twitter for marketing. I would love to try this too for my business.
It will be hard for a competing social networking site (and there are many attempts at creating such sites) to supplant Facebook, in my opinion. Facebook revenue and Facebook valuation are also big mountains for a competitor to surpass. Facebook pretty much has the dominant position in user base and mindshare.
Facebook soaring very sharply, among internet user but it means not that it can beat google like giant search engine.google is still first choice of users, even peoples approaches facebook through google.
such a nice article, i think Facebook will buy Google some Day
or they bought an own island like cuba
Facebook will always be remembered as the people tool in the middle east.
It’s even more now. Some years ago, I would not believe it.
Very interesting post, extemely well thought out and put together. Keep up the good work.
People are starting to use social networks more and more instead of search engines, turning the tables in the internet industry. This is interesting, so Google is at second place now…
Facebook is one of the sites that will be on top ten 2011.
I think facebook is the new centre of the internet. I can not imagine there will be another site some day that will be a bigger thing than facebook… Nothing is stronger than our social life, right? =)
That’s an excellent article !
FB is probably now going to influence our lives that it does already now !
Let’s see.

Thanks for the great information. That graph was fascinating! It is amazing how quickly facebook grew and how it is continuing to grow still. They have a great dallas web design that helps makes users happy.
A fantastic achievement for facebook that can shift the king of the internet.. since facebook is full of benefits of communicating with family, friends, and partners.. i’m not surprised to know that it reached the top!
I personally think facebook is going to beat google in traffic really very soon. Its now the first activity of everyone of the day before going to work and I have thumbs up for this project. Such a awsome work done by Mark.
in my country Indonesia facebook users increased rapidly and they didn’t used google to make acces into facebook,
Im pretty sure too, facebook is going to be around a while before it flops like myspace did. Twitter came along afterwards but i think most twitter uses then reverted back to facebook. thanks for sharing.
Facebook is reaching monstrous proportions and not all of its impacts are good.
Helpful advises above. I have noticed that many people are using twitter for marketing. I would love to try this too for my business.
I have noticed that many people are using twitter for marketing. I would love to try this too for my business.
Thanks for your report, it’s amazing to see how fast traffic for Facebook went up in the last year.
A year later and still on top! Good to see this date recorded, thanks!
Facebook is a power house of a traffic machine!
Modern websites should have a number of social features. One important feature is that visitors should be able to spread word about your services back into their social networks, such as Facebook and Twitter. Sites such as Addthis offer quick solutions for this problem. Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn offer easy to install social buttons.
Facebook is the bubble of all bubbles
Facebook is good how it is and it really entertains people.
Earlier Facebook was a community website but now it is becoming a basic need of internet users worldwide.
Facebook has changed the scenario, now Google has a perfect competitor.
Facebook will become an internet giant like google. And it’s funny to see how many times it was copied… and no other system has that success.
Everyone is on facebook these times and also the online shops, company websites etc. etc. use facebook. Google tries to get a part of the “social” thing back with the +1 thing – i’m not sure if this will work for google. Let’s see…
It is an increadable achivement. People have seen it to be the place to be. Many people do not even have a blog of their own. Why should they when they can have a free profile and so much functionality offered by facebook.
This is a very intersting post! I didnt thought that we will see this happening, another company overtaking Google in visitors… Incredible!
Its a great time for facebook, earlier it was a Social Networking website but now it rules on the internet world. Any ways its beneficial for us because now we are getting more and more updates with the help of Facebook.
I agree with the article. facebook has emerged rapidly and now the situation is that no one can ignore facebook.
Facebook is the new god apparently
Facebook has seen unprecedented growth yet the profits don’t seem to have caught up with it as of yet. People won’t pay for it even if they love it now. The advertising is picking up and perhaps that is bolstering the profit margin. However, there have been so many issues with privacy. Not sure if facebook can be trusted yet. It will be interesting to watch what happens. News today is that the Winklevoss twins are trying to take their case to the Supreme Court!
The success from facebook is crazy but honestly we are all happy, that there is someone else beside Google, right?!
I think facebook is the bubble of alla bubbles ready to burst.
Thats so cool that google no longer is number one..finaly Google has a competitor online.
Competition is always a good thing. The real question is, what is number three ?
I’m really sure that Facebook will bit Google after 1 year. I want it to be so
Facebook – what a genius idea – out of nothing this big company and Millions of Dollars every year… I wish I had that idea!
I believe that the traffic numbers are higher than Google’s because of the number of people that
revisit the site each day.
Imagine the many people who are accessing facebook from their mobile phone.
I believe that Facebook.com can reach up Google.com for the number one ranking in the US internet of those Holidays. It is because Facebook.com is the most popular social networking today.
have noticed that many people are using twitter for marketing. but i;ll suggest you facebook for marketing of your website!!
facebook is going to be around a while before it flops like myspace did. Twitter came along afterwards but i think most twitter uses then reverted back to facebook. thanks for sharing.
Facebook’s growth is amazing….from beeing a friendship-meeting place to THE social media place-to be…
Google and FB will probably never be direct competitors: they just serve different kind of people and different services. Even FB launches their own search engine, people would still prefer Google. The same now with Google trying another social site – FB is already very very well established…
Nice article about facebook, I think now facebook has become one of the most useful platform for marketer to believe and act upon as per they needs. Thanks for such a useful info.
I agree, facebook famous rapidly between every one but it make a virtual relation-ship and divert the mind from social activities which is harmful .
I think facebook.com will win google in the future and will be the king as google is now.
It’s really interesting to read that Facebook received more visits than Google. It looks like Google has some serious competition. Thanks for a great post!
its seems good that facebook is leading google in by getting more traffic everyday
There is no question about that the Facebook will surpass Google in term of the most visited site. And I think it is not only in US but also around the world of how popular the Facebook is.
Now google launched plus as facebook alternative i guess the final battle has begun. The advantage that google has is that it integrates all there service into one gui. Let’s see what the future brings…
Its true facebook is #1 at the moment but, With google new +1 it should be interesting to see if they can keep their rankings.
How do you think this new video feature on FB is going to do? Folks already Skype all over the place, will this actually enhance Facebook usage, or just point out how limited the wall feature is, in terms of actual social interaction? Good article by the way
OMG! I think facebook might surpassed google in the next few months. Keep it up Facebook. Looking for the best game? then try world of warcraft and you might find out this is the game what you’re looking for.
From what i`ve read is true that Facebook is now getting more traffic than Google itself. However i could bet that Google is not concerned about this because only a very little portion of the people who uses facebook are looking to buy something. Facebook is getting too much traffic because of the “social” madness. People are looking to socialize with their friends and make new friends also and the number is rising daily.
However people who are looking to buy or found something with other words the must valuable traffic goes to Google directly.
One day we will look at Facebook fatigue, just like myspace. I already canceled my account. It was getting to big.
In my opinion it’s extremely important that the issues with security and privacy are starting to scare users. I think it’s only a matter of time before they end up getting “Myspaced.”
Do you reckon Facebook have reached their peak now or will continue to grow? I don’t see how they could possibly get any more popular, between going neck-and-neck with Google for #1 and having a blockbuster movie made about them.
small business telephone systems
Google will always be king in my opinion, you only have to look at what they are doing with Google+ and the stir it is causing in the community.
I can wait to see this bubble to BLOW up!!! I can’t believe how easily people gave out their privacy.
Very interesting post! I don’t like FB and hope Google+ will desroy it
Facebook is the new giant
At the onset of Google+ I think they’re seriously trying to get back the traffic that Facebook now is having, whether they’re going to be successful or not remains to be seen
Though it’s obvious that can still win the race against Google, who knows with Google’s new G+ it could be more accepted by Facebook users, too.
Facebook is still on top. I think people like facebook more then twitter because there is to much noise on twitter.
Now all you need is the best screen protector for your iphone screen protector. Don’t get some cheap junk. these invisible shield is the best for your iphone invisible shield screen protector
With G+ on the road I guess Facebook will experience some decline now.
There is nothing odd about this, honestly I can’t think of any of my friends who don’t use Facebook
No doubt… Facebook is rocking and now Facebook has PR 10 more than Google itself.
Right, because Facebook is a part of millions of people’s lives and half of the users return daily.
facebook got such a huge traffic on which globe can’t believe, just in few year unbelievable
thanks buddies
Clearly Facebook has the foundation to be the dominant force for the forseeable future.
Google gets its ranking by providing good search results.
And Facebook get its ranking by providing good place for people to hang out socially.
With Google+, can Google grab all the social traffic from Facebook?
Lin
LED Light Bulbs
facebook is better than google, we don’t need google
How come the G has a less pagerank than Facebook? I always wondered that. I guess they are now trying to gain ground by pushing Google+. Will they succeed? It will be an interesting journey.
Right, because Facebook is a part of millions of people’s lives and half of the users return daily.Facebook is rocking and now Facebook has PR 10 more than Google itself.
Now google plus is rapidly growing i think there is a real competitor against facebook. Let’s just see where this battle ends like krasloten, and lots of other viral hypes.
With Facebook you now have a tool that can quickly and easily enable you to share information, ideas, and support with other local groups.
I am sure that Facebook has Google’s total attention with the amount of traffic that Facebook is getting.
I guess that is probably the only reason for Google plus is for them to start competing directly with Facebook.
Facebook has very large Visitors base and they have maximum number of returning visitors. Also depth of engagement is much higher then Facebook.com
Face book is one of the most popular social networking sites. Its very helpful for getting traffic to your site.
It was only a matter of time before facebook passed google.
