Oprah Effect on Twitter

Oprah Winfrey, the icon that can turn any book or product into a best seller, posted her first Tweet on Friday on her show. There’s been much debate among loyal Twitter users about whether this spells the end for Twitter’s coolness, as soccer moms sign up in droves.
So what was the Oprah-Effect on Twitter? The following chart shows daily visits to Twitter from 1st January to 18th April (Oprah’s first Tweet was on the 17th).
Oprah Twitter.png
Share of US Internet visits to Twitter increased 24% on Friday, April 17, the day of Oprah’s first Tweet. Comparing visits with the previous Friday, visits were up 43%.
Hitwise clickstream data reveals that on April 17, 37% of visits to Twitter.com were new visitors (as opposed to returning). The service typically has a high ratio of new visitors as it is still very much in a growth phase. However, the percentage of new visitors was 5% higher on Friday than the previous day and the average for March. To give a benchmark, Facebook’s ratio of new visitors was 8% in March.
The search term “oprah twitter” was the #35 highest search term with the word “twitter” last week and the #7 with “oprah”. Considering that our search data is weekly and that the show only aired on Friday, this is impressive.

  1. Heather,
I think this is a great topic for analysis – but fear that with only one days worth of data this is a classic correlation / causality analysis problem. You might want to look at this after a few more days to identify if this indeed was a spike relating to the conversation, or if it is just part of the ongoing huge growth in the popularity of the twitter platform. You guys certainly have the data to carry out this analysis! Look forward to more.
    Cheers, J

  3. Impressive. Why don’t you show actual numbers? Weekly actual numbers from Compete were on techcrunch yesterday – it would be nice to compare what you are saying with what they are saying. %’s a nice but actuals are what people make decisions on.

  5. The Oprah Effect: 43 Percent Pop for Twitter

How big of an impact did Oprah’s segment dedicated to Twitter on last Friday’s show have for the microblogging

  6. At the same time that Oprah was picking up her 400,000 followers, Ashton Kutcher and CNN were fighting tooth and nail to break 1,000,000. A number of the 37% new visitors were driven from Ashton Kutcher Billboards and CNN news coverage.

  7. Well, my wife who is also a soccer mom signed up for Twitter. She added me, Oprah and Ashton.. sent all three of us a tweet and then logged out.
I asked her what she thought of it. She said that she could not find her friends easily, did not have a way to see pictures of her friends, and.. basically everything you can do on MySpace and Facebook.
Like many soccer moms, this week will be the first AND last time they use this resource.

  8. I couldn’t help but take issue with the question about “whether this spells the end for Twitter’s coolness, as soccer moms sign up in droves.” Ask any of my fellow Twitter old-timers (as in, been around for a year or more) and soccer moms of the digital mom/mommy blogging variety WERE the core of Twitter long before it went mainstream. We are not its downfall, but we were the ones who made it such an engaging and interactive community. I did a post about why moms love Twitter and that was about a year ago, if I recall correctly.

  9. The Oprahcalypse is nigh.

I’m not sure Oprah can take claim for the spike.
I can’t do anything these days without hearing about the tweet factory. It’s starting to get annoying.

  16. Interesting post. I wonder if Twitter is just a US phenomenon. Is there data for world wide market share. Oprah is viewed outside the US too.

  17. Watch out for corporate chuckleheads to move in and try and squeeze every dime possible out of Twitter. It always ends up that way. They turn good things into complicated, red-taped, greed-filled piles of crap. Just my opinion.

  44. Twitter is becoming a very powerful tool in the search industry and can be used to increase user engagement. I honestly believe that is a matter of time to become universal. It is not only a USA phenomenon.
