Google Video, YouTube and MySpace Vids: An Update

Now that we’ve reached the one week point since Google added the Google Video link to the front page, I thought it would be a good idea to check in on the data. First to John Battelle’s point that the traffic spike to Google Video is probably just an “initial hit,” here’s a new daily chart comparing Google Video to YouTube, Yahoo! Video and MySpace Video.

Both Google Video and YouTube are showing a post weekend decline in market share of visits which over time is the expected pattern for visits to video search/sharing sites. Our weekly chart shows the magnitude of Google Video’s increase last week alongside YouTube’s continued rapid climb. MySpace Vids and Yahoo! Video demonstrate moderate to flat growth since July.

I was initially surprised to see YouTube’s continued climb during last week’s link change at Google (my hypothesis was that there would be some user shift between the two video services). To shed a little light on why we would see an increase to both services, I compared the age demographics of Google Video users to YouTube visitors:

Indeed, it appears that Google’s increased video audience is additive to the video search/sharing space (with YouTube capturing the younger segments of 18-24 year olds). As fortune would have it, YouTube’s site was down for maintanence yesterday, which provides us with an excellent opportunity to analyze the trade-off’s between video services (as we did with the MySpace outage in June). I’ll update the blog when that data is available later this afternoon.

I think you need to look at video.yahoo.com and videos.yahoo.com as well
