Christmas 2.0 – a time for sharing (on Facebook at least)

Social networking has become an integral part of our lives and this Christmas more people will be sharing messages of good will with each other than ever before.

As we get closer to Christmas Day visits to social networking sites have reached a new peak for the year, accounting for nearly 13.5%of all UK Internet visits. In the last week alone there has been a huge uplift in traffic, with visits increasing by 9.7% from 14 to 21 December.

More than half of the traffic is being driven by Facebook. The biggest social site in the world accounted for 57% of all visits to the social networking category In the UK last week and over the Christmas period could create history if it overtakes Google in overall market share online.
Last Christmas the gap between Google UK and Facebook narrowed remarkably as Google’s overall market share fell whilst Facebook spiked on Christmas Day. This year as Facebook has grown it has threatened Google’s position as the most visited website in the UK. 25 December could be the day that Facebook conquers Google in the UK.

The weather this year has already made some pretty severe disruptions to travel and with some families stranded abroad this Christmas it gives even more reason for people to share their tidings of comfort and joy via social networks.
So Christmas 2.0 looks pretty social, which just makes you wonder what they would have done back in Jesus’ time if they’d had Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare. Luckily – some bright spark has already had that very thought and created this excellent YouTube video.

Enjoy Christmas and be sure to follow the blog for more seasonal updates.
