Reformed “Catch Me If You Can” Fraudster Discusses Today’s Techniques

Leonardo DiCaprio plays Frank Abagnale

It’s been over 35 years since Frank Abagnale was on the run from the FBI.  His early life inspired the Steven Spielberg movie “Catch Me If You Can“.  Frank’s part  was played by Leonardo DiCaprio.  Between the age of sixteen and twenty one Frank carried out a brazen fraud spree posing as an airline pilot, forging checks, always staying one step ahead of the law.

But it all caught up with him. He was eventually captured, prosecuted and went to prison for five years. After he got out of prison Frank went on to work for the FBI and American Express as a security consultant. He was able to turn his life around and do something very positive with his talents, helping the FBI and major banks understand how identity thieves think.

In this video interview with The Guardian, Frank describes some of the techniques an identity thief might employ by exploiting publicly posted information on popular social media sites.
