Can A Collection Agency Sell Your Medical Debt

Dear Experian,

Can a collection agency sell your medical debt to another collection agency in order to keep it on your credit report when it’s coming close to the seven year mark?

– BTL

Dear BTL,

A collection agency can sell or transfer your debt to another company, but doing so should not change when the debt will be deleted from your credit report.

Collection accounts are deleted seven years from the original delinquency date of the original account. That date must be reported with the collection account.

While the open date of the new account may reflect the date the account was purchased by the new collection agency, the original delinquency date remains the same, meaning the debt will still fall off the report seven years from that date.

Thanks for asking.
