Two Collections Agencies Reporting the Same Item

Dear Experian,

I have two collection agencies reporting the same item. If I pay the current collection company will both of them be updated as paid in full or do I have to pay them separately?

Dear WJH,

You should only pay the collection agency that currently owns the debt.

The previous collection agency should have updated its account to show it was transferred and closed at the time it was sold. Although both accounts appear on your credit report, when the previous collection agency sold the account to a new creditor, you no longer owed a debt to that company.

It is a good idea to contact the current collection agency to verify where to make a payment before sending money. Once paid, the current company should update your credit reports to show that it has been paid.

Thanks for asking.
