A creditor can request that an account be removed from your credit report

Dear Experian,

Can a creditor request to remove an account from my credit report? Also, how long would it take for the removal to take effect?

Dear JKJ,

Creditors have the right to determine whether or not they report information to the credit reporting companies. Once an account is reported it typically is not removed. However, if the creditor believes an error was made in reporting information, they can request that the information be corrected or removed from the report.

If a creditor consistently and knowingly deletes negative, but accurate accounts or reports accounts incorrectly, Experian will cancel their contract and no longer accept their data.

If you believe there is incorrect information on your credit file, it is always a good idea to contact the creditor directly to discuss it.

If you wish to dispute the accuracy of the information through Experian, first obtain a copy of your credit report directly from Experian.

If you have not already done so, follow the instructions at http://www.experian.com/assistance/free-annual-credit-report.html to request a free copy if you have not received one in the last 12 months. The report will include instructions to contact Experian to dispute anything you believe is inaccurate. You may submit disputes online, by telephone or by mail.

Thanks for asking.
