Unemployment claims do not affect your credit report

Dear Experian,

My colleagues and I had a debate over these questions: Will filing an unemployment claim be reported on credit file? If so, will it affect future credit consideration? Can you help us settle our debate?

- YAW

Dear YAW,

If you said an unemployment filing will not appear on your credit report, you win the debate.

Credit reports do not show unemployment filings or unemployment claims. They only show credit and debt-related information. In addition to credit accounts, that includes tax liens, civil judgments, bankruptcy filings and, in some states, delinquent child support payments.

The impact of unemployment could be reflected in your credit report if you are unable to pay your debts as a result of the layoff, but the unemployment filing itself will not become part of your credit history.

Thanks for asking.
