Name change after marriage won’t hurt credit scores


Dear Experian,

I am married for a second time. Can having my maiden name and two married names negatively affect my credit score? My “middle” score is 780 but I am trying to improve to 800 plus.

Identifying information such as names and addresses do not affect credit scores, so you don’t need to worry about having your maiden name and married names showing on your credit report.

Your credit report lists all variations of your name that have been reported to us by your creditors, so both past and present last names or nicknames may appear. In fact, you will even sometimes see misspelled names that were reported to us. Doing so helps Experian ensure it is compiling all of your credit history completely and accurately. Omitting any of your names could mean losing the link to an account reported in that name. Losing credit history you’ve worked hard for could affect your credit scores.

The best way to learn what you need to focus on to improve your credit scores is to purchase a score that includes a list of the risk factors from your credit report that most affected it.
