Email addresses are not part of your credit report

Dear Experian,

I would like to update my personal information, specifically my e-mail address. How can I do that?



Dear DRI,

You can’t update your email address because email addresses are not part of credit reports.

Personal information, called identifying information, is reported by your lenders and by you when you request your own credit report. It includes your name, address, Social Security number and date of birth. Any variations in your name or nicknames reported by your lenders will also be included. For example, a person named Robert Allen Smith could also see Bob Smith or R.A. Smith listed in his credit report if he applied for credit using those names.

The same is true for Social Security numbers. Any variations reported by lenders will be shown on your credit report. So, if your Social Security number is 123-45-6789, you might see 123-54-6789 if a lender inadvertently transposed the digits and then reported the number to Experian.

The same is true of street addresses. Your credit report will show every address reported as belonging to you.

Listing variations are not errors. Rather, all such variations are listed so that you have an accurate and complete representation of what information is being reported.

Variations in your name, Social Security Number and street address do not affect credit scores, but including all variations is important because it may help you identify fraud or identity theft and enable you to take action.

In most cases, variations are the result of transposed digits and do not indicate fraud, so are not cause for alarm. However, by reviewing your credit report, you can identify the variations and contact your lenders to ensure their records correctly reflect your identifying information.
