Items deleted through dispute should be deleted from all credit reports

Dear Experian,

I disputed items on my credit report to Experian, and they were deleted. Will the items be deleted from my reports with the other two agencies as well?



Dear JSU,

If they were deleted based on instructions from your lender, the information should also be deleted from the credit reports compiled by the other national credit reporting companies. However, Experian does not notify them to remove the information. That is the responsibility of the lender or business that reported the information.

The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) requires the source of the information – the lender or other business – to notify all of the consumer reporting companies that it shared the information with when there is a change or correction to the way it was previously reported. That is because only the business reporting the information knows every consumer reporting company to which it was reported.

The requirement ensures that a change caused by your dispute is made everywhere the information was reported. It’s always a good idea to allow time for such updates to occur and then check your other reports to be certain.
