How long before information is completely removed from your credit report

Dear Experian,

How long does it take to have something completely taken off your credit report and boost your credit once paid off?

Dear ADA,

Your question isn’t clear as to whether you are referring to information you are disputing and believe to be inaccurate or to when derogatory account information, such as late payments is deleted, so I’ll discuss both.

When you believe information is inaccurate, you can dispute it. Experian will contact the source of the information and request that they review their records to determine whether the information is accurate as reported or not.

The information may be verified as reported and remain the same, updated to its correct status, or it may be removed.

Federal law allows 30 days to complete the dispute process, although in most cases online disputes are completed much faster, often within a matter of only a few days. You will receive a notice of the dispute results when it is completed.

Accurate negative information, such as late payments, remains seven years from the original delinquency date. The original delinquency date is the date the payment was first reported late. So, if you miss a payment today, it will be deleted on this date seven years from now. You can find more about the original delinquency date in previous columns.

A paid off account with negative payment information in its history will be deleted when the negative information is deleted, that is, seven years from the original delinquency date. When the status changes from unpaid to paid that has no effect on the deletion date.

Collection accounts are treated as a continuation of the original account. As a result, the original delinquency date also determines when collection accounts are deleted, which is seven years from the original delinquency date of the late payment that led to the collection account.

Thanks for asking.
