Disputing information does not hurt your credit scores

Dear Experian,

Does disputing information with Experian cause credit scores to lower?

Dear MIL,

Disputing information does not hurt credit scores because there is no record of the dispute on your credit report. Scoring models can only evaluate what is present in your credit history.

Disputing information also doesn’t cause the account to disappear from your credit report. Only after the dispute process is completed will the account be updated or removed if the source of the information agrees with your dispute.

You should not hesitate to dispute information that you believe is inaccurate. Experian wants your credit history to be as accurate as possible because that helps you and your lenders.

By disputing information, you are helping us ensure the accuracy of your credit report. If negative information is deleted, your creditworthiness will improve. If the dispute does not result in an update, your credit status will remain unchanged.

Thanks for asking.
