Deleted information can return to your credit report
Dear Max,
I have had items deleted from my credit report after I disputed them and Experian completed an investigation. After a disputed item has been investigated and deleted from your credit report, can it be re-entered at a later time by the same creditor who put it there in the first place?
- ATB
Dear ATB,
Once an item has been disputed and removed from your credit history it can be re-added under certain circumstances and if specific steps are taken, including notifying you.
For example, a creditor can have account information returned to your credit history if it was deleted because they did not respond to the dispute within the 30-day time period allowed by the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA).
The FCRA allows information to be returned when verified by the lender, but only when you are notified in writing by the credit reporting agency that the information is being put back on your credit report.
The challenge for Experian is to recognize an account that is being reported again after we have deleted it. We are very successful when account numbers, debt amounts and other information remains the same. However, lenders occasionally change account numbers and other information that makes it difficult to recognize it as the same after removing the original information from our systems.
Thanks for asking.
